ʿAqīdah, from the Arabic root meaning “to tie firmly” or “to bind,” refers to the science of Islamic creed or theology. It is the branch of Islamic knowledge concerned with the fundamental beliefs that every Muslim must hold regarding God (Allah), His attributes, the prophets, the unseen (such as angels, the afterlife, and divine decree), and other essential matters of faith.

The science of ʿaqīdah lays the foundation for a Muslim’s worldview and spiritual identity. It affirms the oneness of God (tawḥīd), emphasizes His unique attributes, and distinguishes between what is obligatory to believe, what is permissible, and what is impermissible in matters of faith. Rooted in the Quran and the Sunnah, ʿaqīdah also involves rational reflection, especially in response to theological deviations or philosophical challenges.

Historically, different schools of theology emerged to articulate and defend Islamic beliefs, including the Ashʿarī, Māturīdī, and Atharī approaches. While they vary in methodology and emphasis, all seek to preserve the integrity of core Islamic beliefs.

The study of ʿaqīdah is essential for cultivating a sound and unwavering faith, enabling Muslims to understand their religion at its most foundational level, respond to doubts, and maintain clarity in an ever-changing world.
