UṢŪL AL-FIQH
Taqrīb al-Wuṣūl ilā ʿIlm al-Uṣūl of Imam Ibn Juzayy al-Kalbī
Taqrīb al-Wuṣūl ilā ʿIlm al-Uṣūl is a concise and systematic introduction to the science of uṣūl al-fiqh (principles of Islamic jurisprudence), authored by the Andalusian Mālikī jurist and theologian Ibn Juzayy al-Kalbī (d. 741 AH / 1340 CE). Designed as a pedagogical tool, the work seeks to make the complex discipline of legal theory accessible to students, presenting its foundational concepts in a clear and organized manner.
The text covers the essential topics of uṣūl al-fiqh, including the primary sources of Islamic law (the Qur’ān, Sunnah, ijmāʿ, and qiyās), the mechanics of legal reasoning, the rules of interpretation, the role of language and semantics in deriving rulings, and the conditions for ijtihād. Ibn Juzayy also engages with differing perspectives within the Sunni legal schools, offering a comparative approach while remaining rooted in the Mālikī tradition.
As both a summary and a guide, Taqrīb al-Wuṣūl reflects the scholarly rigor and clarity characteristic of the Maghribi-Andalusian tradition. It continues to serve as a valuable primer for students and scholars seeking a grounded yet approachable entry point into Islamic legal theory.
