ḤADĪTH

Al-Arbaʿīn al-Nawawiyyah of Imām al-Nawawī

Al-Arbaʿīn al-Nawawiyyah, commonly known as The Forty Hadiths of Imām al-Nawawī, is one of the most celebrated and widely studied collections of Prophetic traditions in the Islamic world. Compiled by the renowned 13th-century Shafiʿi scholar Imām Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī (d. 676 AH / 1277 CE), the collection contains 42 hadiths that encapsulate the core principles of Islam in matters of belief, worship, ethics, and spirituality.

Imām al-Nawawī selected these hadiths based on their foundational importance and authenticity, most of which are narrated by both al-Bukhārī and Muslim, the two most authoritative hadith compilers in Sunni Islam. The hadiths in this collection cover comprehensive themes such as sincerity, intention, faith, lawful and unlawful matters, character, brotherhood, moderation, and reliance on Allah. Together, they provide a holistic framework for understanding and practicing Islam.

One of the unique features of this work is that it aims to gather “jawāmiʿ al-kalim”—concise sayings of the Prophet ﷺ that convey deep and broad meanings. Imām al-Nawawī intended this compilation to be accessible to all Muslims, from beginners to advanced students, and scholars across centuries have written numerous commentaries on it.

In summary, The Forty Hadiths of Imām al-Nawawī serves as a timeless primer in the ethical and spiritual teachings of Islam, offering practical guidance and deep insight into the prophetic legacy. It remains a foundational text for students of knowledge and anyone seeking to live by the essence of the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ teachings.
