MANTIQ
Al-Sullam al-Munawraq of
Imām al-Akhdarī
Al-Sullam al-Murawnaq fī ʿIlm al-Manṭiq, commonly known as Al-Sullam, is a well-known didactic poem on logic (manṭiq) written by Imam al-Akhdarī (ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Akhdarī, d. 983 AH / 1575 CE), a prominent Algerian scholar.
The poem is composed in rajaz meter and serves as an introductory text in Aristotelian logic, particularly as it was adapted into the Islamic intellectual tradition. It covers fundamental topics such as:
– Terms (taṣawwurāt) and propositions (taṣdīqāt)
– Categorization and definitions
– Syllogisms (qiyās) and logical inference
– Fallacies and proper reasoning
Al-Akhḍarī also emphasizes the importance of logic in understanding Islamic sciences, stating that it helps protect the mind from errors in reasoning. Because of its clarity and poetic form, Al-Sullam is widely memorized and studied in traditional Islamic seminaries, especially in North and West Africa.
Many commentaries have been written on it, including by the author himself, making it a key introductory text in the study of logic within the Islamic tradition.
Consists of 20 classes.
The course was taught by Shaykh Zuhayr Qazzān in 2022.
