Fiqh, derived from the Arabic word for “understanding,” is the science of Islamic jurisprudence that deals with the interpretation and application of Islamic law (Shariah). It involves a deep understanding of the Quran, the Sunnah (traditions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ), and other sources of Islamic legislation, such as consensus (ijmāʿ) and analogical reasoning (qiyās). Unlike Shariah, which is the divine and immutable law of Islam, fiqh represents the human effort to understand and apply that law in various contexts.
The science of fiqh encompasses all aspects of a Muslim’s life, from acts of worship (ʿibādāt) like prayer and fasting, to civil transactions (muʿāmalāt), such as marriage, business dealings, and criminal justice. Over time, scholars developed schools of thought (madhāhib) such as Hanafi, Maliki, Shafiʿi, and Hanbali, each with its own methodologies and legal principles.
Fiqh is both a spiritual and intellectual pursuit, requiring not only knowledge of religious texts but also linguistic, historical, and cultural understanding. It plays a crucial role in guiding ethical conduct and resolving legal issues within Muslim communities, adapting to new challenges while remaining rooted in foundational principles.
