Muqaddimat al-ʿIzzīyah—often simply referred to as al-ʿIzzīyah—is a concise and widely taught primer in Mālikī jurisprudence attributed to Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn ʿĪsā al-Shādhilī, not to be confused with the famous Sufi master Abū al-Ḥasan al-Shādhilī. This text has served for centuries as an essential introductory manual for students of Islamic law in North and West Africa, particularly within the traditional maḥāḍir and religious institutions.
The Muqaddimah covers the foundational rulings related to acts of worship (ʿibādāt), including purification (ṭahārah), prayer (ṣalāh), fasting (ṣawm), zakāt, pilgrimage (ḥajj), marriage (nikāḥ), and financial transactions (muʿāmalāt māliyya), all according to the Mālikī madhhab. It presents these topics in simplified, practical language suitable for beginners, aiming to instill correct ritual practice and prepare students for more advanced legal study.
The text is characterized by its clarity, brevity, and pedagogical structure, often studied alongside oral commentary from teachers. It does not delve into juristic debate or evidence, but rather transmits relied-upon rulings, making it ideal for memorization and foundational instruction.
Due to its accessible style and sound content, Muqaddimat al-ʿIzzīyah has been a mainstay of Mālikī curricula for generations. It continues to be studied as a stepping stone toward deeper engagement with more complex Mālikī texts such as al-Risālah of Ibn Abī Zayd and Mukhtaṣar Khalīl.
All classes are recorded for students to study or review. Live participation is not mandatory, but recommended.
