Study the introduction of Ibn Juzayy al-Kalbī to his work in tafsīr, al-Tashīl li-ʿUlūm al-Tanzīl, consisting of 12 chapters. A great introduction to the sciences of the Qurʾān.

Al-Tashīl li-ʿUlūm al-Tanzīl by Imām Ibn Juzayy al-Kalbī
Al-Tashīl li-ʿUlūm al-Tanzīl is a classical Quranic commentary (tafsīr) authored by the distinguished Andalusian scholar Imām Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Juzayy al-Kalbī (d. 741 AH / 1340 CE). As its title suggests—“The Facilitation of the Sciences of Revelation”—this tafsīr aims to present the meanings of the Qur’an in a clear, accessible, and methodical way, making it easier for students and scholars to grasp the essential themes and rulings of the Qur’anic text.

Written in a balanced and concise style, al-Tashīl combines elements of tafsīr bi’l-maʾthūr (commentary based on transmitted reports) and tafsīr bi’l-raʾy (interpretation based on informed reasoning). Ibn Juzayy draws upon the insights of earlier commentators such as al-Ṭabarī, al-Zamakhsharī, Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī, and al-Qurṭubī, while often offering his own measured critiques or preferences among differing views.

The work addresses:
– Linguistic and rhetorical features of the Qur’an
– Juridical rulings derived from the verses (especially according to the Mālikī school, to which Ibn Juzayy belonged)
– Theological insights
– Clarifications of ambiguous or complex passages
– Occasional references to variant readings and grammatical points

One of the distinguishing features of al-Tashīl is its pedagogical clarity—it avoids overly technical debates and lengthy digressions, making it suitable for advanced students of the Qur’an as well as scholars looking for a reliable and concise tafsīr.

In summary, Al-Tashīl li-ʿUlūm al-Tanzīl is a refined and accessible commentary that synthesizes rich scholarly tradition with clarity and depth. It remains an important resource for those seeking a coherent and practical understanding of the Qur’anic message, grounded in both scholarship and reverence.
