ʿAQĪDA

Umm al-Barāhīn of
Imām al-Sanūsī

Umm al-Barāhīn, also known as al-‘Aqīda al-Sughra, is a famous Islamic creed written by Imam Abū ‘Abdillāh Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Sanūsī (d. 895 AH / 1490 CE), a renowned scholar of the Ash‘arī school of theology.

This brief text summarizes the core beliefs (ʿaqīda) of Ahl al-Sunnah waʾl-Jamāʿah in a concise and structured way. It focuses on:

– The twenty attributes of Allāh ﷻ that are necessary (ṣifāt al-wujūb)
– The impossible attributes (ṣifāt al-mustaḥīl)
– The possible attributes (ṣifāt al-ja’iz)
– Beliefs about the Prophets ﷺ
– Basic principles of theology and rational proofs for the existence and onness of Allāh.

Umm al-Barāhīn is often memorized by students and serves as an introduction to Ash‘arī theology. Many commentaries have been written on it due to its deep content despite its short length.

Consists of 20 classes.

The course was taught by Shaykh Zuhayr Qazzān in 2022.
